What is FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system, operated by the NHAI. Based on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, FASTag is affixed on the windscreen of vehicles. In other words, FASTags are prepaid rechargeable tags for toll collection. FASTags do not have any expiry date, hence, they can be used as long as they are not tampered with and are readable at the toll plazas.

How does the FASTag system work?

Vehicles which have FASTag enabled on them do not have to stop at toll gates as charges are deducted from the prepaid or bank account when the vehicle is moving. This means that drivers do not have to stop their vehicle to make transactions as the toll collection will be done electronically under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program. Thus saving time and improving the overall UX.

My Role

This project was created as a part of an internship assessment. I was responsible for the whole process from research and strategy to conception, creation, visual design and prototyping.

Problem

1. No proper app available for managing FASTag
2. Competitor apps such as Paytm and Airtel App, have FASTag management as a shared feature with other primary app functions
3. Other major players involved in FASTag are banks having not a very convenient methodology and user experience to issue the tag.

What this App does

The main aim of this app is to provide all services related to FASTags. It should be easy to navigate, intuitive and user friendly.
The primary user goals were identified as:
1. To buy a new FASTag
2. To view balance and payment history of the FASTag
3. To Top-Up / Recharge the FASTag

I suggested an extra feature which calculates the different possible toll amount. The user can enter their location and destination and they will be shown the different toll amount for different routes which they have to pay and then they can choose whichever route they want to take. Once they choose the route they want to take, they will be directed to google maps which will navigate them through that route.

The navigation of the app consists of Home, My FASTags, Profile and Help.

Home is the dashboard where the user sees the current selected FASTag and can perform different actions (user goals listed above). The home screen also has the calculate toll feature which makes it easily accessible to the user and they can use it if they want to.

My FASTags consists of all FASTags which are registered under the user’s name.
They are color coded as follows:
Orange FASTag is the currently selected FASTag.
Yellow FASTag is the one which is under processing.
Grey FASTag is the idle state of the fastag which means that it is not yet selected.

Profile consists of the basic user details such as name, phone number, address and their Address and ID proofs which will save the user’s time to upload those documents again and again for buying the FASTag. The user has to complete their profile as soon as they login for the first time.

Help has all FAQs answered which the user might have in their mind.

Target Users

1. Anyone in India who owns a vehicle except owners of Two-Wheelers
2. People driving through the Toll Gates on Indian Highways. Bus and truck drivers(owners) / frequent travellers.

User Goals

The user should be able to:
1. Buy a new FASTag for their vehicle
2. See FASTag account balance and past transactions
3. Top-Up FASTag Balance
4. Calculate Toll amount by entering location and destination and choosing the desirable route.

User Flow

User flows are the deliverables visualising the complete path that users follow across the whole solution.

Card Sorting

Card sorting helped me achieve my first draft of information architecture for the product which was further edited over the course of ideation.
